Astro Bot Shows Strong Performance Despite Declines
The latest sales figures from Famitsu reveal that Sony Interactive Entertainment’s “Astro Bot” continues to demonstrate robust performance, although it experienced a decline in its second week.
According to data for the week of Sept. 9-15, the game sold 8,882 units, bringing its total to 21,554 units.
“Astro Bot” was initially launched to great fanfare, attracting attention due to its innovative gameplay and the continued popularity of the Astro series. While its weekly sales dropped by 30%, the title remains a significant player in the Japanese gaming market.
In comparison, Nintendo Switch games dominated the top 10 weekly sales charts, with “The Hokkaido Serial Murder Case: The Okhotsk Disappearance – Memories in Ice, Tearful Figurine” leading at 20,919 units.
Despite “Astro Bot” only capturing the second spot, it outpaced other high-profile games like “Mario Kart 8 Deluxe” and “Nintendo Switch Sports,” which sold 7,840 and 7,069 units, respectively.
Console Sales
The PS5 saw sales of 10,095 units across Japan, reflecting a decrease from the previous week’s 11,007 units.
This drop continues a troubling trend for Sony, as weekly sales of the console have quickly fallen into the 4-digit range. The breakdown reveals that 8,254 units were of the standard PS5 model, while 1,841 units were the digital edition (PS5DE).
In comparison, the Nintendo Switch remains the dominant hardware with 50,574 units sold during the same period, crossing the Switch OLED (34,250 units), Switch Lite (11,570 units), and the standard Switch model (4,754 units). Xbox Series consoles (XBS) also faced declining numbers, with sales totaling 675 units.
Historical Context and Industry Analysis
With the competitive landscape in Japan, where Nintendo continues to hold a significant market share, the enduring popularity of games like “Animal Crossing: New Horizons” and “Pokemon Scarlet / Violet,” which sold 6,967 and 4,215 units respectively, underscores this dominance.
Meanwhile, legacy titles such as “Minecraft” and “Super Smash Bros. Ultimate” also showed stable performance.
